Why Our Dallas Clients Take Advantage of a Trigger Point Injection (TPI)?

Pain can be felt in the body for numerous reasons and in multiple ways. One of the reasons why you may be feeling pain is due to an issue that is sometimes referred to as trigger points. These areas of inflammation and spasm can occur in the muscles or in the fascia, which is the fibrous connective tissue that surrounds the skeletal muscles. It is possible to experience trigger points in any part of the body, but they are more commonly experienced in the upper back muscles or in the area of the shoulder.

Trigger points can occur for any number of different reasons but they are a common problem which is generally associated with another musculoskeletal disorder. Some of the common disorders which can lead to trigger points include low back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome. If you experience repeated tension headaches or pain of the jaw joint (temporomandibular pain), it may also lead to trigger points. In some cases, you may also suffer from this difficulty if you have minor injuries on a repeated basis or due to acute trauma.

Although there may be different options available for the treatment of trigger point pain, one that is commonly used is a trigger point injection (TPI). It is a type of injection that is given directly into the trigger point in order for an anesthetic to be directed to the area. This anesthetic may differ, depending upon your needs and the preference of the physician but lidocaine is a common choice. Your doctor may also want to inject a corticosteroid hormone into the area to reduce inflammation and it may be mixed with an anesthetic, which will numb the area. Yet another way that trigger point injections may be completed is through dry needling, in which no medication is to be injected into the area but a needle is inserted into the trigger point.

A More Detailed Look at Trigger Point Injection in Dallas

A trigger point injection is an outpatient procedure that may be done at the doctor's office or in certain cases, in another clinical setting. The patients will be made comfortable and put into a position which makes it easy to access the trigger point. In some cases, an ultrasound will be used to assist with the location of the trigger point but in most cases, the doctor will be able to locate it by a gently pinching the area. Trigger points are often easy to feel when the skin is pinched.

The skin in the area of the trigger point will be cleaned and a topical anesthetic may be used to help numb the area of the injection. This helps to reduce any pain that is associated with the injection itself. After the area has been numbed, a needle will be inserted directly into the trigger point and the solution (possibly corticosteroid and anesthetic) will be injected into the area. This is done to cause the trigger point to relax and to reduce inflammation, which could be leading to the difficulty. If the initial injection is not sufficiently able to relax the trigger point, additional injections may be necessary in the same general area.

After the injections have taken place, the area will be clean and a bandage will be applied. You may be directed to apply heat or ice to the area to help reduce swelling and pain. It may also help if you take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID), such as Advil which will help to reduce the pain that you may be experiencing further.

It is not common to experience side effects with trigger point injection. You may have some pain that is associated with the injections but it is typically a temporary issue. Steroids, which may also be injected during a trigger point injection could also lead to side effects, such as fat shrinkage in the area which could cause a visible dent in the skin.
